DAMP TREATMENT
TimberGuard Timber & Damp are specialists in damp proofing in Ashford, Tunbridge Wells, Canterbury,
Tenterden and throughout Kent.
What is rising damp?
Rising damp occurs when dampness in the ground travels upwards by capillary
action through porous building materials such as brickwork, mortar or
sandstone. The effect is the same process that makes oil travel upwards
through the wick of a lamp.
Rising damp can often be identified by the characteristic discolouration or marking of decorations on wall surfaces. This marking
is caused by the soluble salts contained in the groundwater evaporating and accumulating at the upper level of the rising damp.
Although damp proof courses are included as standard practice in new buildings, older properties may not have one. Also,
most damp proof courses will break down after a number of years and will eventually need replacing.
When a damp proof course fails, or if none exists, damage can occur to lower wall areas. This usually involves disruption to
plaster and decay of any timbers in contact with the damp walls
How is rising damp treated?
The solution to rising damp is to install or reinstall a remedial damp proof course. This involves removal of the affected plaster
and skirting boards, installation of a new chemical damp proof course and then re-plastering with a salt resistant plaster and
renewing or replacing skirting boards. Existing skirting boards can be refitted if they are in good condition.
Treatment is by the high pressure injection of solvent-based fluids or low pressure injection of water-based creams using
low-pressure cartridge guns.
TimberGuard Timber Preservation will survey your property for free and provide you with a full report and a quotation
for any necessary repair and treatment work at a cost competitive price. On completion of our Damp or Timber
Treatments, we provide a 20 year guarantee covering all labour and materials for completed works plus the assurance
of a 20 year guarantee after the work has been completed.
The effect can be prevented by installing a barrier, usually known as a damp proof course, in the wall sited near the base of the
property. This barrier prevents the passage of moisture and so resolves the problem.
